Covid-19 Employer Vaccine Mandates - Religious and Medical Exemptions

Vaccine mandate deadlines for several large Central Pennsylvania employers, including WellSpan Health, the Defense Logistics Agency Support Distribution center in New Cumberland, and the Letterkenny Army Depot among others, are rapidly approaching. WellSpan Health’s deadline for the submission of exemption requests is November 1, 2021, and the Department of Defense deadline is November 8, 2021.

Attorney Schott has already had success obtaining a religious exemption for clients from Johnson & Johnson and is working on several religious exemptions on behalf of clients employed by WellSpan Health, BAE Systems, Naval Support Activity, Mechanicsburg, Defense Logistics, New Cumberland, UPMC, and National Government Services among others. Certain employers are accommodating religious exemptions. Other employers are making the process complex perhaps with the intent of tripping up employee applicants into making a misstatement that can be used to deny the exemption request.

While the mandates are being challenged on several fronts, there is no assurance any remedy will be forthcoming or timely, and a remedy may only apply to employees who have submitted their exemption requests.
